blog posts #6 and #7  (After you have completed the novel)

5/4/2013

You have now met four young people who all "lived" in the Elizabethan Era:  Peter Brownrigg, Katherine (Kit) Kirkstone from Cue For Treason and Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet from Romeo and Juliet.   Choose one of the topics below and respond to it.

Topic #1:  Battle of the Sexes
Based on what you have observed/read, which of the sexes is "superior"?  Use
criteria like their place within society, how they are expected to act versus how
they actually do act, which characteristics they demonstrate.
OR
Topic #2:  Italians Versus English
Based on what you have observed/read, which of the two couples is "better" and                         why?  Use criteria like feelings for one another, how they work together and
demonstrate their emotions, how they act when making big decisions.

This is personal opinion - you may use "I"!  Your post should be at least 5-7 sentences but it does NOT have to contain direct quotations.  It should reference to both Cue for Treason and Romeo and Juliet and use specific examples.

Hint:  In order to make your post as clear and error-free as possible, consider writing it it in Microsoft Word, then cutting and pasting it into your comment.

Due Date:  Friday, May 17th (before 11:59 pm)

Once people have posted their initial opinion, you must read through your classmates' posts and provide at least ONE comment in reply.  Agree or disagree with their opinions - but remember it is an academic discussion and keep it that way!

Due Date:  Friday, May 24th (before 11:59 pm)

Blog Post #5 (after chapter 22)

5/4/2013

In Chapter 20, Peter wonders at one point "What don't old people realize how quickly a boy grows up?" (Trease 233).

How has Peter "grown up" in this novel?  Write a post (of at least 5-7 sentences) that answers this question.  You should follow proper paragraph format:  a topic sentence that gives an overall statement about how Peter has grown up.  Support your ideas with at least TWO (2) quotations from the text, properly blended and cited, e.g. (Trease 24)  and explanations.  Don't forget a conclusion as well!

Hint:  In order to make your post as clear and error-free as possible, consider writing it it in Microsoft Word, then cutting and pasting it into your comment.

Comments MUST be entered with your name displayed as First Name Last Initial
(e.g. Callie S.)

Due Date:  Thursday, May 9th (before 11:59 pm)

Blog posts #3 and #4 (to end of chapter 18)

4/23/2013

Let's try something different this time.  Skim through Chapters 11 - 18 (that will cover Chunks #3 and #4).

Find your favourite quotation within those two sections.  Post it as a "comment" (properly cited), along with a brief explanation of WHY this is your favourite quotation (it doesn't need to be longer than 1-2 sentences).  Is it because you like the language within the passage?  Is it because it creates suspense?  Is it because it reveals something about your favourite character or because we learn something new?

Due Date:  Thursday, April 25th

At some point after Thursday, you must return to this same blog post and post a COMMENT in reply to someone else's comment (in other words, you must respond to the favourite quotations from your fellow students).    Note:  These responses are academic in nature and should respond to the ideas within the comments.  If your comments are not appropriate, they will be removed.

Due Date:  Wednesday, May 1st

Blog Post #2 (after Chapter 10)

4/14/2013

This novel is written from first person point of view (Peter's).  While Peter is our protagonist, Kit Kirkstone is a very important minor character.  However, because of the narrative point of view, we don't know much about Kit other than what Peter shares with us (including quite a revelation at the end of Chapter 7 and beginning of Chapter 8).

For this blog entry, you are going to have a chance to be a little creative and put yourself in someone else's shoes:  You are going to write from the point of view of Kit Kirkstone.  Your entry must be at least 5-7 sentences in length.  You should pick a scene or event from Chapters 6-10 and re-write it from Kit's point of view.  In it you should share Kit's thoughts about life in the travelling theatre company, or in the acting company in London, and you should also include Kit's feelings about Peter.  It can be in the form of a diary entry, or a letter, or just a straight narrative paragraph.  It can include dialogue (with quotation marks) with other people from the novel.

This blog entry will be evaluated using the same blog entry evaluation (relate it to the novel, show that you understand the change in point of view, and ensure that it is written in standard English).

Due Date:  Please post by 11:59 pm, on Friday, April 19th.  Once again, use only your first name and last initial.

Blog Post Evaluation

4/9/2013

The blog post evaluation is now posted on the Cue For Treason page.  I will be using this to evaluate all of your blog posts.

Your First post:  After Chapter 5

4/4/2013

We are reading this novel in part in order to gain an understanding of the Elizabethan world in which William Shakespeare lived and wrote his famous plays (which you will study for the rest of high school!)  So, what have you learned so far?

Write a post (of at least 5-7 sentences) describing what you have learned so far about ONE of the following topics.  Your post should include at least ONE (1) quotation from the text, properly cited, e.g. (Trease 24).  If you wish to pose questions for other people (or me), please do so ... replies will make the conversation much more interesting!

Hint:  In order to make your post as clear and error-free as possible, consider writing it it in Microsoft Word, then cutting and pasting it into your comment.

Comments MUST be entered with your name displayed as First Name Last Initial
(e.g. Callie S.)

Topics:
1.  The life of "regular" people in Elizabethan England (e.g. the farming families of Peter's neighbourhood, Cumberland) versus the wealthier people (e.g. Sir Philip Morton).

2.  The nature (what were they like?) and importance (who attended and was interested in them?) of plays/theatre in Elizabethan England.

3.  Elizabethan Justice - why was Peter so scared that he fled from his home and family?

4.  Life in a travelling acting company in the Elizabethan Era.

Due Date:  Friday, April 12th (11:59 pm)

This is the place where you will respond to the novel to demonstrate that you are keeping up with your reading and doing analysis of what you're reading.

Please post your comment by putting in your First Name and Last Initial (e.g. Callie S.)

Comments need to be written in complete sentences but they can have an informal academic voice (e.g. you may use "I" but no "txt msg language").  Remember:  this is a public academic space!

You may reply to the comments of other people in either class.
