in my opinion, Friar Lawrence is very insightful. Being an old man who has experienced many different things he has grown to be very wise and insightful. One of his insightful lines include "Pronounce this sentence then: Woman may fall when there's no strength in men" (II, iii, 79-80) He is essentially saying how can woman be faithful when men are so unreliable? he says that to romeo saying how he changed girls so quickly that Juliet might not be so faithful, which is very wise and insightful. Friar Lawrence is also a genuinely happy man. I think this because he says such things like "The grey-eyed morn smiles on the frowning night" (II, iii, 1) He is a man who seems to enjoy the little things, like the early morning. It makes me thinks he is genuinely happy.

I agree with you Nick, the Friar is insightful ... that's why Romeo and eventually Juliet go to him for advice. However, his "solutions" don't always work out, do they? Near the end I lose respect for him because he isn't so insightful and is almost cowardly.

I think Friar Lawrence is a very nice and caring person. The Friar also shows that he is un-selfish by saying, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, / For this alliance may so happy prove / To turn your households’ rancor to pure love. (II.iii.90-92)”. I believe that the Friar, even though Lord and Lady Capulet, and Lord and Lady Montague would be against the decision to marry Romeo and Juliet, he married them anyways to keep Romeo and Juliet happy, and to possibly end the feud between both families. I also think that the Friar is very optimistic. After Romeo got banished from killing Tybalt, the Friar says,
“What, rouse thee, man! Thy Juliet is alive,
For whose dear sake thou wast but lately dead-
There art thou happy. Tybalt would kill thee,
But thou slew’st Tybalt - there art thou happy.
The law that threatened death becomes thy friend
And turns it to exile – there art thou happy.
A pack of blessing light upon thy back,
Happiness courts thee in her best array,
But, like a misbehaves and sullen wench,
Thou pout’st upon thy fortune and thy love. (III.iii.135-144)”.
Because the Friar is always talking about the good, that leads me to believe that he is very optimistic.

Shelby, you are right that he is optimistic ... perhaps too much so? He thought that if he just married Romeo and Juliet, all of the strife within the city would disappear. Well, that was not quite right was it? Perhaps he thought he had power that he didn't have?

I agree with Shelby i do think that the Friar is very kind man and very helpful towards Romeo and Juliet. He truly cares for them and wants to help as much as he can. i know this because when Romeo slayed Tybalt the first person Romeo ran to was the Friar this is because the Friar is a very trust worthy man and would do anything to help them on there struggles. Such as giving Juliet the poison that will put her to sleep for 42 hours. In any way the Friar could help he would, therefore he is a very dependent man that you can trust. 4.1 122 " hold. get you gone.be strong and prosperous i will send the letters to thy lord. This also shows that he is willing to do anything.
